Ally Pally Summer Festival

AllyPally-Summer Fest

With temperatures in London hitting the 30s this week it was perfect timing for Alexandra Palace’s annual Summer Festival. Live music, street food, plenty of pimms, a giant waterslide and loads of room to set out a picnic blanket in the sun with a group of friends, what better way could there be to spend a sunny weekend in the city?

The festival is free entry and open to all ages. Not only does the event offer several live music stages, but it also invites many of London’s best and most unique buskers to perform throughout the day all over the grounds.

Alexandra Palace’s boating lake also remains open throughout the day. For only £5 per person for half an hours hire it was a nice opportunity to grab an ice cream and get away from the festivities for a bit.

The festival also has plenty of other activities going on throughout the day such as a silent disco, family raves, Segway riding and tree rope climbing. However the highlight of the event for me (and it seemed for most others) had to be the giant waterslide.

After being voted as one of Time Out London’s top things to do in 2015, tickets for this years slide were a hot commodity and sold out weeks before the event. The tickets cost £8 and you are given an hour long time slot to have your go. Although you ride on a giant inflatable, swim-ware is definitely a necessity as at the bottom of your descent you’re plunged into a large pool of water. The slide itself is also a lot faster than expected, with many people being thrown off their inflatable part way down (don’t worry everything is soft so it doesn’t hurt!).

The festival was a fun, and surprisingly cheap, summers day out. It is suitable for both groups of friends looking to enjoy some drinks and live music, as well as families looking for activities to entertain the kids. My main advice for anyone looking to go to next years festival is to keep your eyes open for event tickets being sold in advance!
